​The Department of Restoration of the Otrar State Archaeological Reserve-Museum was established in 1984. Anarkulov Pernebay, Zhusanbaev Ilesbay, Zhumabaev Oserbay, Yesen Kasetov at one time headed the department. Since the beginning of the organization of the department, employees of the department have been involved in the restoration of museum exhibits, the design of the exposition hall and exhibitions. In 1986, a kiln was built as an experiment and experimental firing was carried out. An employee of the department, an artist-restorer Karabdalov Kendebay, using local raw materials, fired in order to clarify the technology of medieval ceramic production. In 2005, after a break, the department was reopened. This was facilitated by the participation of employees in the conservation work, which was carried out under the auspices of UNESCO.

​The monuments of the Otrar oasis have been included in the provisional UNESCO World Heritage List. 2001 between the Republic of Kazakhstan and UNESCO signed an agreement "Preservation and restoration of the ancient city of Otrar", which was funded by UNESCO. The project involved the Ministry of Science and Education, the Ministry of Culture, Information and Sports, the Republican State Enterprise Scientific and Design Institute of Material Culture Monuments, the Otrar State Archaeological Reserve-Museum, which worked together. 2001-2004. conservation work was carried out under the international project UNESCO - Kazakhstan - Japan.
