The Department of Ethnography, Literature, Cultural and Social Events was organized in 1982. In 1998-2004, it worked as the Department of Arystanbab and Ethnography. 2005 since January received its original name and continued systematic work on ethnography. Currently, A. Zhumasheva is working as the head of the department. The department has 3 senior researchers and 3 researchers who work according to the approved plan. The Department of Ethnography, Literature, cultural and social events is engaged in research, scientific collecting, exposition, stock and other works. Employees of the department write scientific papers based on ethnographic sources, promote historical and cultural heritage, organize field scientific expeditions, business trips to collect ancient monuments among the local population.The Department of Ethnography, Literature, Cultural and Social Events also conducts scientific research of sources about traditions, applied arts, everyday life, crafts, material monuments and spiritual heritage of the Kazakh people. The Department of Ethnography collects precious heritage of the past for the purpose of scientific research, examines the current state of the local population, promotes historical and cultural monuments, traditions and performs the following works:
Research of the ethnographic and folklore material collected in the museum;
Conducting scientific research in the chosen direction;
Participates in scientific expeditions organized by the museum, business trips to collect ancient monuments among the local population;
Collects scientific literature on museology, traditions, applied arts, everyday life, crafts, material monuments and spiritual heritage of the Kazakh people;
Research and promotion of the applied art of the Otrar oasis;
Conducting joint seminars, conferences with museum staff, artisans, ethnographers, historians, archaeologists;
Exhibitions, lectures on ethnography, folklore of the Kazakh people in schools, institutions;
Participation in international and national conferences and seminars, forums and other events held at universities, schools, institutions;
Organization of various scientific, cultural and educational events;
Promote the exchange of experience between museums;
Publish articles on ethnography and folklore, on the history of Kazakhstan in scientific journals;
Conducting a study of ethnographic materials located in the funds of the museum;
To conduct scientific and educational propaganda of cultural heritage through mass media;
